How to make a greenhouse from the bottle

Why do we need a greenhouse from plastic bottles, if today there are a lot of modern materials that allow you to build a good stationary greenhouse for many years?

  • Plastic bottles are a completely free material that forms the basis of the whole structure (walls and roof). About 600 bottles will be needed to assemble the entire greenhouse, and on average we throw at least 30–40 pieces into the garbage every month.
  • This is a real savings, since you only have to buy nails and boards according to the size of the base of the greenhouse, and if you have them in the country, then you will not have to buy anything.
  • Strange as it may seem, it will sound, but such a “bottle-shaped” greenhouse will be sufficiently strong, stable and durable, since such bottles have a service life of 30 times longer than the plastic film.
  • The greenhouse of the bottles has excellent thermal insulation qualities and this is due to the “thermos effect”, which is created by the hollow inner parts of the bottles.

Preparation for construction: drawings, diagrams and dimensions

You can build a greenhouse very quickly, knowing all the technology and accurately observing the entire list of requirements.

Especially you will not have to make a project, because here you only need to specify three parameters: the height, width and length of the structure, as well as the frequency of construction of supporting structures, the shape of the roof and other nuances.

    • If you do not have enough bottles to create a greenhouse, then you can always ask them from your neighbors or buy them at reception points.
    • But in order for you to have enough of them, it’s best to start collecting from the end of summer, and next spring you will have enough, and you can keep them at your dacha, and no one will steal them.
    • It is possible to fasten the plates not only with a fishing line or thread, but also with the help of fire, slightly melting the edges and gluing them together. But this is not a very convenient way, because you can not calculate and strongly melt the plastic, or you get a hole.

    • If you do not want to make the door of the bottle, then you can just stretch the film on the frame. We make a rectangular frame and two lintels on a diagonal so that it does not tilt, and then we stretch the film on it and with the help of the rails we nail it into a good tension.
    • If desired, and if possible, instead of a fishing line or a kapron thread, thin and durable bamboo sticks of the same length can be used to collect the posts, and believe me, this design will be more durable and reliable. Also, there will be no need to make even a batten.

    Walls will need to collect the required number of plastic bottles with a capacity of 1.5-2 liters. It is desirable that their shape and volume were the same. Remove the labels from all bottles, then rinse and dry the container.

    When collecting plastic containers should be aware that transparent white products have an ideal bandwidth for sunlight. Therefore, they are more suitable for greenhouse walls. Dark packaging is recommended for creating ornaments or assembling the corner elements of a structure.

    Due to the fact that the plastic greenhouse does not differ in large weight, it does not need a massive foundation. As a basis, you can use a bar of 100x100 mm, impregnated with an antiseptic, or slag blocks laid in a row, poured with cement mortar for strength.

    Frame assembly

    To assemble the greenhouse frame, one or two assistants will be needed, since its wooden parts will have to be periodically maintained during installation, connecting them into a “paw” or overlap with screws and metal corners.

    In general, the process looks like this:

      To the base of the bar 100x100 mm, laid instead of the foundation, you need to attach the vertical posts, and then run on them two straps - upper and lower. Step racks should be taken at least 1 m.

    Frame racks need to be covered with nylon thread in several rows with a step of 30-40 cm between them so that these distances are enough to accommodate the bottle posts.

    Wall construction

    Roof installation

    A beautiful greenhouse is also easy to make from glass bottles. For many years such a structure can serve. Its construction will go slowly, but its result is worth the time and effort spent - it is very warm in such a greenhouse.

    Before you make this greenhouse from the bottles with your own hands, you will have to collect a considerable amount of glass containers. It is desirable that all products have the same shape and length. Remove the labels from the bottles, clean the container from the glue and dry it. At the time of work, the bottle necks should be closed with plugs to prevent dirt from getting into them.

    With the shape and dimensions of the roof of the greenhouse you need to decide in advance. If it is sloping and not hipped, one wall of the structure should be higher than the others.

    In construction there are no special difficulties, but it is important to perform the work in the prescribed sequence. Due to the fact that the construction of glass will have a solid weight, without a strong foundation is not enough. For its device, you need to install a formwork, lower the reinforcement into it, pour M400 concrete and level its surface with the rule in the horizontal plane.     As the stacking of the bottle rows, the surface of the glass products must be cleaned of the cement composition. If it seizes well, it will be very difficult to clean the bottoms, the transparency of which depends on the amount of light and the comfortable temperature in the greenhouse.

    Why are we talking about plastic bottles? After all, you can build a greenhouse and wood or metal, lined with foil. But the whole thing is in the advantages that are inherent in the material. Let's consider them so that you can be convinced of the expediency of building a greenhouse made of plastic:

    How to make a greenhouse

    Our greenhouse will be covered with plastic bottles. The frame itself is made of durable materials to hold the walls and roof. Before you get to work, you need to stock up on these bottles themselves. In general, the average greenhouse you need about 1000 pcs of plastic bottles. Each of them should be prepared. How? Let's find out.

    Preliminary preparation of bottles for plating

    First sort the bottles according to their displacement and color. Ideally, use a flat transparent bottle, a light or brown shade. Their volume is 2-3 liters. Labels on the container should not be, remove them. And in order to remove the remnants of glue on plastic, it is required to soak the products in a soap solution. Then the bottles will be clean and suitable for work.

    The next stage is to construct plastic walls. In this article we will look at two options for creating a greenhouse:

    • from a continuous cloth of plastic,
    • from whole plastic bottles.

    You can choose the one you like the most. So, let's start by creating a canvas for the greenhouse.

    Plastic linen greenhouse

    It all starts with bottle cutting. Your task is to cut the bottom and neck of the bottle, since we will not need them, and cut the resulting cylinder along one side. So you get a semblance of a rectangle from a plastic bottle. This is only a small part of the whole structure, like a brick in a masonry.

    Since the blanks will be curled, they can be put under some kind. During the time you process the rest of the bottles, each piece will level out. The next step is to sew the resulting plates. This is done overlap, using a sewing machine. Created narrow strips of plastic. Overlaps must be created in one direction. To make the connection durable, we recommend using a nylon thread of medium thickness.

    The resulting strips must have a length identical to the height of the greenhouse, plus a margin of 20 cm to complete the hem. The resulting narrow strips need to be stitched into one solid blank or canvas. This is a kind of film, only denser and cheaper. The width of the canvas may be identical to the gap between the supports (frame) or large to completely wrap the greenhouse around the perimeter. You decide.

    To create a roof, you can use slate made from the same bottles. He, too, should be prepared in advance.Your task is to divide the resulting cylinder (without bottom and neck) into two parts.     Frame making and trimming

    The creation of the frame begins with the foundation. But, since the bottles have a small weight, like wooden elements of the frame, the foundation may be shallow. Sufficiently shallow strip foundation. And it is possible to fill the perimeter of the structure with old tires. They are dropped in half and forgotten by gravel.

    Even when building the foundation, you can dig holes under the supporting pillars. Their depth is 50-60 cm at the height of the greenhouse up to 2 m. After that, the supporting pillars are strengthened by strapping, additional bridges and wind connection. Fixation is performed with simple nails or, better, with self-tapping screws. At the same stage, the frame for the front door and windows is mounted. It is imperative to saturate the tree with linseed oil to protect it from rotting. As an option, you can use this design, laid on strong bars.

    That's all, now you can do trim the frame. Better if someone helps you. Fixation of plastic cloths to the tree is done by screws under thin strips. Make sure that the trim is well stretched, but do not overdo it, in order to avoid deformation of the seams. In conclusion, glue the joints with construction tape, making the greenhouse of plastic bottles sealed. Top seam allowance (those 20 cm) bend around the beam and lock from the inside. The bottom is fixed to the foundation.

    It remains only to put the roof. Use a pre-made slate. In the photo below you can see another version of the greenhouse from a continuous sheet. As you can see, her appearance is very decent.

    We considered one option to create a greenhouse of plastic containers. It is more difficult and costly in time and power. There is a simpler option. In this case, the bottles do not need to be cut. Here are the detailed instructions for creating:

    1. The foundation and the frame is created on the same principle as at the beginning. Only here the frame should consist of corner beams, lower and upper trim. The walls will serve as reinforcing bars on which the products are mounted. As for the diameter of the fittings, the rod should fit tightly in the neck of the bottle. And the length of the rod - 10 cm more than the height of the frame. To attach the plastic container to the rod, in the bottom should make a hole identical to the neck.
    2. But the subsequent bottles should be cut only the bottom, tightly putting them on each other. You can see this in the photo.
    3. The bars of the reinforcement are fixed to the frame from above and below with self-tapping screws.
    4. The remaining blanks are collected on the same principle.
    5. Columns of plastic containers are tightly pressed to each other so as not to form gaps.

    The roof can also be assembled on the same principle. And in order to perform waterproofing, a film creeps under the bottles. Inside the gap they caulk, to protect the plants from the wind.

    Strange choice? Far from it

    Plastic bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is absolutely neutral and suitable for drinking liquids.

    Plastic bottles are an inexhaustible storehouse for various handicrafts, single bottles are used as flower pots and tiny greenhouse plants for seedlings. Drain pipes are made from a large number of them. And sometimes - a serious engineering structure: deep drainage on the site. Our "Kulibins" went ahead and invented a new use for bottles: fences and hotbeds. Especially since there are a lot of empty bottles at all, and you can always ask your friends and neighbors to throw more.

But often equal lengths of plastic pipes or metal fittings are simply stuck into the ground.     • durability: it is clear that plastic bottles do not wear out, a fungus does not start on them, and in the case of a defect, it is enough just to replace the bottle or two,
    • accessibility: a greenhouse made of plastic bottles is cheaper than any other possible material;
    • the ease and simplicity of making a greenhouse from bottles: you do not need to be a super ace in construction,
    • the ability to make bottles of any design of a greenhouse: a house, lean-to, arched and so on,
    • the ease of installing a greenhouse anywhere in the garden-garden and transfer to this place indiscriminately into components,
    • universality: a greenhouse from bottles is suitable for a lot of tasks, from growing seedlings to keeping thermophilic plants during the cold season,
    • temperature stability (bottles withstand decent temperature drops from -50 to + 130 ° С and do not heat up),
    • environmental friendliness: the material of the bottles is chemically neutral and harmless to humans, land and plants,
    • beauty: you can choose the color of the bottles in such a way that the greenhouse becomes a real work of art.

    Only two disadvantages:

    • it is quite difficult to collect the required quantity (minimum 300–400) of bottles for a greenhouse,
    • it is quite difficult to find time for painstakingly assembling a greenhouse from bottles.

    Preparation for construction in general

    First of all, we need to understand what size greenhouse we need. Given the complexity of collecting components, you do not need to do it too big.

    Let our construction be on a wooden base, in the form of the most primitive small house. We accept the dimensions of the base 2x3 meters, the height of the greenhouse walls - 2 meters, the height of the ridge - 1 meter.

    We draw a drawing by hand, set the size and estimate how much timber, slats, screws and corners we need to buy.
