Gloriosa Flower: Planting and Grooming at Home Photo and Planting from Seeds

Gloriosa (GLORIOSA) is a genus of unusually beautiful exotic plants growing in tropical regions of Asia and Africa. It belongs to the perennial family and contains 10 species.

Popular name Gloriosa "lily of glory", "fiery lily"

Gloriosa is a climbing plant with a tuberous rhizome. Stems branched, reaching 2 m in length. Attached to the support with a small antennae at the end of the sheet. Leaves curled at the top, alternate, sessile.

Grow and care for gloriosa at home for its beautiful flowering. Unusual inflorescences, grow at the end of long peduncles, are located singly. They are large, same-sex, two-color.

Over time, the inflorescences change from yellow to red, because of the colors it is called - curly lily.

Gloriosa is a poisonous plant, so use of its parts as food is prohibited. And after working with him, it is advisable to wash your hands. Also, the plant is used for landscaping, home or for sale in a bouquet.

Cultivated species

Flowers of the genus Gloriosa are widely grown at home. But of all kinds, only two are very popular:

Gloriosa gorgeous - perennial liana, the most common species for growing. Also has another name - gloriosa luxury. It has long shoots and narrow, sessile, oblong leaves, twisted at the top. Flowers have pink, yellow, red hues. Petals are wavy, thin, 6 cm long. The plant pleases with flowering from June to September.

Gloriosa Rothschild - liana-like perennial flower with long curly stems. On them are light green, lanceolate, narrow leaves. Gloriosa rothschildiana has wavy, oblong flowers. They are painted burgundy, purple color and grow to 10 cm in diameter. Gloriosa flowering period in June-August.

There is another plant with a similar name - rudbeckia gloriosa daubl. But it belongs to the Astrov family and does not look at all like an exotic flower to Gloriosa.

Glorosis care

Lighting mode and temperature

Gloriosa flower loves content in sunny places. In the warm season, it can be transferred to a balcony or garden. It is best to place plants suitable sills eastern and western windows.

During the warm periods of the year, gloriosis must be kept at an air temperature of 20-25 ° C and drafts must be avoided. During the dormant period, the tubers of the plant are stored in a cool place with a temperature not lower than 10 ° C. In the spring, when the first shoots appear, glorioso needs to be gradually adapted to the change in air temperature. A sharp jump in temperature can destroy your plant.

Air humidity

The elevated humidity of gloriosa tolerates well. But, if the excess moisture is constant, it can get sick. Every day you need to moisten the plant with warm distilled water. When spraying during flowering, water should be avoided on the inflorescences.

Watering and feeding

Watering is done after a slight drying of the top layer of the soil. During active growth, gloriosa is watered with warm, settled water. It is necessary to prevent complete drying of the soil, leaving the substrate a little wet. In the autumn, when growth slows down, watering is reduced, the plant is no longer watered at all.

When flowers appear on the stalks of Gloriosa, it is recommended to fertilize it 2 times a month. For dressing use mineral and special organic fertilizers.

Features care Gloriosa

The plant is not whimsical and does not require special attention to itself. With the help of antennae on the leaves, the vine clings to the supports for retention. But you still need to tie a thin stem for additional stability. Thin wires or rods may be used as supports.

The greatest growth of gloriosa occurs at the end of spring and the beginning of summer. In an adult plant, the stem can reach 2 meters in length. So that they do not bring much inconvenience, the stems of young plants are tied up. Then gently bending, they are sent down.

Soil composition and transplanting gloriosa

It is possible to prepare the soil for transplanting a plant by mixing 2 parts of humus, 1 part of leafy ground, 1 part of peat and coarse sand.

It is better to transplant gloriosa every spring, adhering to such rules:

  • capacity for the plant, you must choose a wide, but shallow. Ceramic pots are better than plastic pots.
  • it is necessary to pour a small layer of drainage to the bottom,
  • the tuber is placed horizontally in the soil and is covered with 4 cm of soil from above.
  • the tuber is very fragile, if it is damaged - the plant may not grow,
  • after planting gloriosa, the temperature is maintained at 20 ° C. Care must be taken to keep the soil slightly moist.
  • when the first sprouts appear, the plant is transferred to a bright place.

Gloriosoic care during rest

Plant growth stops at the beginning of autumn. Gradually the leaves turn yellow, the stem dries. At this time, watering is stopped.

In winter, tubers can be stored in two ways:

  1. Pot with tuber is placed in a dark place with room temperature until the end of winter. Then the plant is transplanted into a new soil.
  2. Rhizomes, taken out of the pot, placed in dry sand. A box with a tuber is placed in a refrigerator with a temperature not lower than 10 ° C. In early spring, the plant is planted in fresh soil.

Reproduction gloriosa

The most common breeding method of gloriosa is the division of tubers. For this, when planting, the tubers are cut into pieces, and the sections are treated with coal.

Tuber planted sprout up and sprinkled with earth

The soil is prepared from a mixture

You can additionally warm the pots below. After the appearance of the first germ, it is tied to a support. From that moment on, the flower starts to be watered.

Also, flower reproduction is possible by sowing seeds, but this is a long process:

  • You can self pollinate the plant. To do this, brush pollen is transferred to the pistil of the same gloriosa.
  • After pollination, seeds will begin to appear. When they ripen, sow in the soil and cover with a plastic bottle.
  • Periodically air the room with the plant, avoiding drafts.
  • Air temperature is kept at the level of 22-26 ° С.
  • When sprouts appear, they are thinned and seated separately.

Gloriosa from seeds will bloom no sooner than three years.

Diseases

  • with insufficient clarification, planting a diseased tuber, keeping it in cold conditions, growth of gloriosa may slow down,
  • when temperature drops, the leaves of the plant darken and wither,
  • if the tips of the leaves turned yellow and dried up - the soil lacks moisture,
  • on the contrary, when there is too much moisture - the stem withers, the leaves at the base turn yellow,

Of the pests, gloriosa is most affected by aphids and shields, which are fought with insecticides.

Gloriosa - care at home. Cultivation, transplantation and reproduction of gloriosa - Flowertimes.ru

The tropical plant of Gloriosa (Gloriosa) is a member of the Melanthian family (Melanthiaceae). In nature, it is found in the tropical latitudes of southern Africa and in Asia. The name of the plant comes from the Latin word "gloria" - fame, so it is also called the "flower of fame."

The rhizome of Gloriosa is a tuber, its thin shoots wind up, clinging to the antennae. Bright green leaves have an oblong lanceolate shape, on the stem can be located opposite each other or 3 pieces. Long peduncles are in the axils of the upper leaves. On them there are on two flowers formed by several petals in the form of lilies.

Right under the flower there are perianth 10 cm each, they have a bright orange color with a yellow frame at the edges. After the flower blooms, the perianth also closes.

Gloriosa is popularly called the lily of the flame, the lily of glory, or the climbing lily, because it changes color during flowering from yellow to rich red. At the same time, a mature flower is somewhat like a fire blown by the wind. The plant has a long flowering period during spring and summer, and dead buds are quickly replaced by new ones. One stem can have from 4 to 7 buds.

Temperature

The optimum temperature for gloriosa is 20–25 degrees Celsius, it is in this range that it feels good from spring to early autumn. Next, the plant begins a period of rest when its tuber will need to be stored in a cool dark place at a temperature above 12 degrees.

With the onset of spring, when new shoots appear at the tuber, the plant needs to gradually increase the temperature of the content. We can not allow a sharp change of mode: from cool to hot right away - this can destroy the flower.

Air humidity

To ensure a sufficient level of moisture in Gloriosa, you can add an expanded clay or pebble to the pot tray and fill it with water halfway. A moisture-loving plant is useful to constantly spray with soft water at room temperature. In this case, the drops should not fall on the blooming buds.

Abundantly watered flower only in spring and summer. Water for this will need to insist well. Before watering, the soil should dry out from above, but complete drying is unacceptable. With the onset of autumn, when the leaves begin to turn yellow, watering is reduced, and in winter, no rest is watered at all.

Gloriosa develops well in a soil rich in nutrients: humus and leaf soil in a 2: 1 ratio with the addition of peat or sand is quite suitable for it.

Fertilizers and fertilizers

It is best to alternate between types of fertilizers: first, mineral, then organic. The frequency of fertilizing is about 2 times a month.

As soon as the dormant period ends, the gloriosa tuber will need to be transplanted into a fresh substrate. It is placed horizontally in the ground, covered with a layer of 2-3 cm above.

The tuber is considered to be the most fragile and sensitive part of the plant; it should be protected from any damage. Especially carefully it is necessary to monitor the integrity of a single growth bud at the rounded end of the tuber, without it the flower will die. Unlike other tuberous, new gloriosa will not be able to grow from its separate part.

The most suitable pot for a plant is a wide, shallow clay bowl. Plastic containers are not desirable. Good drainage is also required.

Transplantation is carried out in the late winter-early spring. After that, the soil should be moistened regularly, and the temperature range of the content should be within 15-20 degrees. As soon as green leaves begin to appear on the surface, the plant is gradually trained to light.

Features of growing Gloriosa

Like all creepers, young gloriosis is immediately recommended to tie to a support, because the lower leaves may not have tendrils, which means that the plant will lose the ability to curl upwards. Thin wire or reeds are suitable as supporting elements. Support with a large diameter is better to use as a frame.

In May and June, the plant has the most intensive growth period: the shoot can reach 1-2 m in height. To make the flower look aesthetically pleasing, it is possible not only to tie the stem, but also to bend down very carefully.

Rest period

The first signs that Gloriosa begins a period of rest is the yellowing of the leaves and the drying of the stem. Usually it starts in September, now you do not need to water the tuber. The size of the root depends on the mode of irrigation: if it was abundant, then the tubers thrive well, if the moisture is not enough - on the contrary, they shrink.

Store roots in two ways:

  1. For the whole winter, leave it in the same pot, do not remove it from the soil, keep it in a dark place at room temperature, away from heating systems. In February or in March to plant in a new substrate. With this method of storage tuber comes to life after 14 days.
  2. The underground parts of the flower can be taken from the old soil and for the whole autumn and winter should be placed in a box with peat or dried sand. The lid of the box will need to close tightly and put it in the refrigerator, where it is stored at a temperature of 8 to 12 degrees.

In this case, the tuber after transplantation in early spring will come to life a little longer than in the first variant. But this should not be a cause for concern.

Reproduction tubers

It is best to propagate gloriosis using parts of a tuber. It is divided with a sharp knife into several parts and is well powdered with coal powder. If babies have appeared in an old root crop, then they are simply carefully separated from the mother plant and planted in separate pots.

Capacities for them are selected with a diameter of 13 to 16 cm, and the soil can be mixed independently from a part of sod land, 2 parts of leaf and humus, and half a part of sand.

The only growth point at the rounding of the root must be at the top, and the tuber itself is covered with a three-centimeter layer of substrate.

A freshly planted plant will develop better at a temperature of 22 to 24 degrees. You can start watering only after spitting new shoots. Weak stems better to provide support in the form of thin rods. As the root system of the gloriosa grows, the plant will need a larger pot or even transplant into open ground.

Seed propagation

Seed breeding method gloriosa can also be used, but you need to be patient. To obtain seeds, the flowers should be pollinated independently using a cotton swab. Such self-pollination will lead to the formation of the ovary.

It is not worth to store seed for a long time, but it is better to bury it immediately into the ground consisting of peat, turf soil and sand in a 1: 1: 1 ratio.

Create a mini-hothouse for the constancy of the climate, maintain a temperature not lower than 22 degrees and regularly air landing.

Germinated seedlings, as soon as they grow up, thin out and dive into separate containers. The first flowers appear on them only after three years.

Growing problems, diseases and pests

  • New leaves and flowers do not appear for a long time - there is little light, damage to the tuber or hypothermia.
  • The leaves became sluggish and dark, the stems ceased to stretch - sudden changes in temperature.
  • Yellowed leaves and dry their ends - little moisture in the soil and air.
  • The leaves turn yellow at the base, limp and wilted stems - waterlogging, rotting of underground parts.
  • Leaves with white bloom - too much humidity of the environment and soil, or drying of the earthy coma.

Gloriosa is most often exposed to infection by a scaly and aphid.

Gloriosa magnificent - the queen of a home tropical garden

Gloriosa magnificent is a perennial herb with a large root similar to the "carrot". A strange plant attracts attention and, of course, is an ornament in any home greenhouse. Gloriosa is used in the interior as a climbing and climbing plant, so it needs to provide artificial support in order for the antennae to cling to.

Gloriosa flower is a climbing plant of the lily family. The homeland of this spectacular flower is the tropical regions of Asia and Africa. It has curly graceful thin stems, growing from oblong fingers or carrot-like tubers.

The stems are covered with satin leaves with antennae at the ends: with the help of these antennae the plant clings to the support. Gloriosa leaves are elongated, glossy, painted in bright green color. From the leaf sinuses at the tops of the stems appear very original single flowers, reaching 12 cm in diameter, similar to the "turban".

Externally, they resemble lily flowers, large, with long, wavy, sparse petals bent upwards. Flowers are usually painted in two colors.

There are few species of which are mainly cultivated: Gloriosa luxurious or gorgeous, Gloriosa simple, Gloriosa Rothschild, Gloriosa daisy or rudbeckia. The most fashionable and desirable in the indoor floriculture type of Gloriosa luxurious or gorgeous.

Fruits large carrot color perfectly round seeds, which are often called - Gloriosa peas. All species are flashy indoor plants up to 1.5 meters high, blooming all summer. Faded flowers are removed.

The plant is poisonous, it cannot be eaten.

Gloriosa luxurious or gorgeous (Gloriosa superba)

Gloriosa is gorgeous or gorgeous. The species has many synonyms - Gloriosa rothschildiana, Gloriosa abyssinica, Gloriosa virescens, Clinostylis speciosa, Gloriosa simplex and others. The most famous decorative look. Homeland Sri Lanka, Nepal, Africa. It grows on clay soils. Shoots reach a height of 2 meters.

The leaves are flat, glossy lanceolate forms. The leaves grow in turns, 3 pieces each, up to 10 cm long, up to 3 cm wide. The flowers grow from the sinuses, they have curved bright red petals with wavy edges and a yellow border. Under the folded petals are very visible stamens.

Petals uneven up to 8 cm long and up to 2.5 cm wide.

Gloriosa is gorgeous or gorgeous

Gloriosa Rothschild (Gloriosa rothschildiana)

Gloriosa Rothschild has curly shoots. The length of the leaves reaches 8 cm, lanceolate form. Axillary flowers, grow one at a time on 10-centimeter pedicels. Petals up to 10 cm long, edges - wavy with a kink, of purple color with scarlet spots below.

Gloriosa Citrine Citrina - this variety has a carmine pattern on straw-colored flowers.

Also known is the variety Rudbeckia Gloriosa, although it has no direct relation to tropical vines. The plant is annual, and its appearance resembles a huge chamomile, the color of the flowers is like a liana.

Sprouting

Gloriosa successfully adapted in Australia, but rapid growth suppressed local herbaceous plants, which was recognized as a dangerous weed. Very tenacious plant.

In the subtropics of gloriosa can be up to 5 meters long. Gloriosa blooms very beautifully, attracting attention and attracting fans. The flower itself looks like a flame of fire in the wind, so the second name is “flame lily”.

Short description

This magnificent perennial belongs to climbing grassy lianas. Because of the similarity with the lily, gloriosa is also called the flaming lily, and the lily of glory, and the creeping lily. In its natural habitat, the vine grows up to 5 m per season, but in a room floriculture its growth is limited to 2 m. The flower of gloriosa behaves well in cutting, preserving its beauty for up to 2 weeks.

Very spectacular and unusual liana is amazingly beautiful not only during the flowering period. In gloriosa bright green glossy leaves, large, with elongated tips-tendrils, are located directly at the stem, and peduncles, on the contrary, are long and bloom only on the upper leaves. The inflorescences drooping down and the perianth leaves bent up are perfectly combined with each other, and it seems that these are not petals, but long and wavy fiery tongues flowing into each other shades, from yellow to orange-red.

Attention! Externally, the flower of gloriosa contains a deadly alkaloid for humans. It does not cause skin irritations, but is toxic when ingested with food, even in microscopic amounts, so you need to work with it with gloves and wash your hands thoroughly.

Among the varieties bred at home, some can be particularly distinguished.

  • Unconditional leadership belongs to Gloriosa Luxurious (magnificent) - it has the most spectacular perianths: the lanceolate lobes are pink on the outside, two-colored on the inside with a yellow base and red tips. Flowering begins in June and lasts until September.
  • In the African Rothschild gloriosa, curled petals are yellow-red in color. It blooms from early spring and captures the middle of autumn.

  • The flower of Gloriosa Daisy belongs to the hybrid varieties - it is an annual herbaceous plant, not a tropical vine, and, as can be seen in the photo, only the color of flowers is similar to true gloriosa.
  • Gloriosa varieties of Santa Maria are characterized by a variety of shades and their combinations: from lemon to dark purple. Only this variety can grow in the shade, in cutting it will stay for 2 weeks and does not impose strict requirements for watering and feeding.

Methods of reproduction and landing

You can buy a young plant of gloriosa in a flower shop, you can dilute with tubers, and for those who are not looking for easy ways, it is possible to sow with seeds.

When planting seeds gloriosa bloom only for 3 years. If you agree to wait so much, the seeds are soaked for a day in water and sown in a moist soil no deeper than 0.4 cm. Ceramic pots, a drainage layer is required, the soil mixture is purchased universal or you need to mix equal amounts of turf soil, peat and sand. It is necessary to cover the top with a film to create a greenhouse effect, but once a day they need to be aired and at the same time sprayed the earth. Before the emergence of sprouts, it may take 2 months, their warming or warming of the bottom of the pot will accelerate their growth. Optimum conditions 25-27⁰С.

To propagate the flower of gloriosa tuberous method, you need to separate the children and put them in one pots or immediately into separate ones. In the first case, the nodules are planted slightly obliquely so that the growth buds look in different directions, and in the future the plants do not interfere with each other. It is possible to cut the tuber itself on the principle of a potato into pieces and plant, but be sure to powder the slices with coal. Children or tuber fragments are planted in ceramic pots with a diameter of 12-15 cm in loose and nutritious soil mixture. Do not water until sprouts appear; heat containers below at 22-24 ° C.

Gloriosa requires a dormant period, which begins in September with yellowing leaves. Plants are transferred to dry conditions, and when the shoots dry out, they dig up the tubers, put them in sand, then in a paper bag and send them to storage in a refrigerator at 8-12⁰. You can leave gloriosa in pots, if there is a dark, cool and dry place with a temperature of 16-18⁰. In both cases, the transplant is carried out in February-March, but after the refrigerator the growth shifts by 2 weeks.

The flower of gloriosa needs an annual transplant to stimulate the awakening of the kidneys, and it requires a complete replacement of the earth. Tuber is placed strictly horizontally, from the top to the surface of the earth they leave 2-3 cm. In a plant, all parts are very fragile, therefore the kidney and roots must be handled very carefully - it can die from the slightest damage.

The main points of care

The main requirement of regular and abundant flowering - cool in the dormant period with strict temperature control. Without the fulfillment of this condition, gloriosa is not something that will not please you with flowers, not even beautiful foliage. A comfortable temperature at the stage of active growth and flowering is 20–25 ° C, but the conditions must be stable, differences in airing and drafts are excluded. During the wintering period, temperatures below 12 ° C and above 18 ° C are unacceptable, since the process of planting flower buds is disturbed.

As for the sunlight, Gloriosa loves him, but in a slightly diffused form - the western or eastern window-sills will be an ideal option. Even in light penumbra, the plants will stretch, flowering will stop.

Gloriosa flower requires constant moistening of the potted earth and the surrounding air. Abundant watering is done before the rest period, it also stops smoothly, while spring watering begins more abruptly. To increase the humidity of the air, using humidifiers and trays with wet pebbles or moss.

Feed Gloriosa at the stages of active growth and flowering, combining or alternating mineral and organic supplements 2 times a month. Gloriosa is not cut, because the flowers are formed only on the upper leaves, and send shoots down, trying to twist them around the support. Small antennae are not distinguished by particular tenacity, they are not at all below, therefore liana needs help. It is better to choose supports in the form of ladders with thin rods - thus it will be easier for Gloriosa to independently form a thick crown. Fulfilling these requirements, there is no doubt that your tropical beauty will luxuriously bloom for several months.

Varieties and types

Gloriosa Rothschild - the floral symbol of Zambia has bright crimson perianths with strong corrugation at the edges. Flower bulbs of this type, supplied by the famous Dutch company Baltus, are highly popular in online stores in Western and Eastern Europe.

Gloriosa luxurious (she - gorgeous) grows in Africa, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. The look is remarkable that its bright yellow flowers are not corrugated, and, on the contrary, completely smooth. When wrapped outside, they take on a shape similar to exotic Chinese lanterns.

Sort Gloriosa is the gorgeous heart of Africa with overall very beautiful flowers, green at the base with a smooth transition to yellow, orange and bright scarlet, when distilled at home, it reaches a height of 1.4 meters. In the low Gloriosa luxurious yellow (kind) flowers are painted in bright lemon tones.

Gloriosa is simple at home - in Africa - it grows in length by 3 meters. Green-red flowers in the shape of bluebells are hanging on its graceful green branching shoot.

Watering Gloriosa

In the summer watering Gloriosa should be abundant. Earthen room the entire period of active growth need to keep a little wet.

With the onset of autumn and yellowing of the foliage, watering is gradually reduced and completely stopped for a time of rest. Also important is the overall humidity of the environment, and therefore regular spraying will not interfere.

Soil for gloriosa

The soil for gloriosa should be chosen loose, with the content of the desired compounds and a neutral acidity index. For the preparation of soil mixture using humus and leaf soil in proportions of 2: 1 or turf and leaf land with peat in equal quantities.

The porosity and looseness of the soil can be achieved by using coarse sand, perlite or sphagnum moss. A universal nutritious earthen mixture with the desired pH (6.6-7.2) is easy to buy at a flower shop, yet, as an option, a mixture based on soil for roses and palm trees (1: 1).

Gloriosa transplant

Gloriosa transplant in the end of winter or in the first days of spring before the start of growth, so as not to break the rather fragile roots. The deepening of the tubers is performed approximately 2-3 cm.

For transplanting, fresh soil is needed, consisting of sod, peat, leafy lands with humus and sand in equal proportions. The fast-growing gloriosa transports the summer transshipment with an earthen clod into a larger pot well.

Fertilizer for gloriosa

Top dressings bring in the spring and in the summer on time in 14 days. They consist of mineral and organic fertilizers. In winter and autumn they stop.

In the spring, already grown up gloriosa begin to fertilize every week until the end of flowering, using liquid fertilizers for flowering houseplants according to the instructions given in the instructions.

Pruning gloriosa

Pruning will not benefit Gloriosa in any way - after it there will be no new branches and flowers.

This procedure can even harm flowering, as the formation of flowers takes place on the top leaves and stems and, if cut, the flowers will appear only after the full recovery of the vines.

Gloriosa wintering

In the autumn, before the onset of winter, the temperature in the room should be gradually reduced to 10-14, thereby preparing the plant for rest.

The loggia with glazing, a balcony, a veranda with insulation, a basement are well suited as a winter storage for Gloriosa.

Gloriosa from seeds at home

Propagation of gloriosa can be carried out both with the help of seeds and using tubers. The seed method is relatively simple, but new plants in this case will bloom no earlier than 2-3 years later.

In February, seeds should be sown in plates filled with leafy earth and peat. After they are covered with glass, perform daily ventilation and set the ambient temperature in the region of 22-24.

Sprouted and grown seedlings should be thinned and transplanted in separate pots.

Diseases and pests

Among the pests for gloriosa the most dangerous are shield and aphidthat are disposed of by spraying with konfidor or aktar.

If excessive watering has taken place followed by acidification of the soil, it may develop root rot. You can cope with it by removing the tuber from the substrate, cleaning it from damage and treating with a fungicide and pounded activated carbon.

The cured plant is either planted in a new substrate, or, in winter, left to be stored in a vessel with dry, clean sand.

Gloriosa flower growing indoor plants

Gloriosa - decorative exotic flower extraordinary beauty. Its popular name is "Flaming lily" - arose due to the change of yellow color during the flowering period of rich red. In adulthood, the flower resembles a small light in the wind.

Description of the plant with a photo

Gloriosa (lat. Gloriosa) - tropical representative families of Colchicaceae (Latin Colchicaceae). Her natural place of residence is the southern part of Africa and Asia. This is a perennial plant with climbing shoots and lanceolate leaves. Its maximum height is 5 meters.

Flowers are on long peduncles. The root system is a tuber.

Gloriosa blooms all summer, some varieties - even in spring. Dying buds are replaced by new ones. On the stalk are located from 4 to 7 buds.

Petals have a wavy (curly) shape and smoothly change their color during the flowering period. Stamens become straight over time. Especially for home cultivation, there are dwarf varieties whose height is only 30-40 cm.

Gloriosa has several varieties. The most popular ones are:

  • luxurious,
  • Rothschild,
  • Citrine
  • Carson,
  • yellow
  • simple.
Gloriosa luxurious grows in tropical rain forests on clay soil at 1.5 km above sea level. Shoots grow to a height of 2 meters. Leaves up to 10 cm long and up to 3 cm wide are pointed at the end, arranged in three and grow alternately. Flowering period begins in June and ends in August.

Gloriosa Rothschild common in African rainforest. Its main difference is an extensive system of climbing shoots. Leaf length is 8 cm. Single flowers are located in the axils of the leaves on 10 centimeter pedicels. Petals have a bright red color. The flowering period lasts all summer.

Citrine different dark red pattern at the base of yellow flowers.

Gloriosa Carson has the appearance of a two-meter evergreen vine. The stem is subtle and knotty. Leaves have tendrils on the end. The flowers are dark purple with a yellowish tinge and curved petals.

Gloriosa yellow differs from previous varieties branching creeping stem. Flowers of a soft yellow color have curved petals.

Gloriosa is simple widespread in tropical African forests. The plant grows up to one and a half meters. 8-cm leaves have a pointed to the end of the form. Petals are characterized by smoothness and yellow-green color with a reddish pattern. The flowering period lasts all summer.

Cultivation and care

Caring for gloriosa at home and growing it is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. First of all, remember that this tropical flower Moisture for him - the most necessary thing. Therefore, the soil should be constantly and moderately moist. Regular spraying of leaves and stems will not be superfluous.Soil is better to choose a nutritious and loose, slightly acidic, with good moisture and breathability.

Lighting and temperature

The plant needs sunlight, but in the hot period of the year, direct rays should not affect gloriosa. When growing indoors, it is better to place the flower from the east or west side (due to the dining shadow).

Spring and autumn - the best time for a flower because of the temperature level (about 20-25⁰С). In winter, the plant is at rest: the top dries and dies. During this period, it is necessary to dig up the tubers and sprinkle them with sand.

The overwintering takes place at a temperature of about 10–12 ° C, after which the plant is transplanted into a new soil.

During summer flowering, watering should be sufficiently abundant. It is better to use rain or soft water, which was settled for 12 hours. Watering is carried out by moistening the top layer of soil, which managed to dry 1 cm.

Creepers require so that the soil is constantly moistened otherwise they perish. However, the volume of watering in the fall must be reduced, and in winter completely stop.

Feed gloriosa during the flowering period every 3-4 times a month. Fertilizers are ideal for this purpose for flowering houseplants, which are publicly available in flower shops.

Creepers grow very quickly and require reinforcement and garters, as the stalks are fragile and the flowers grow at the very top. There are antennae on the stalks, but they are unable to wind the armature without assistance.

The support should consist of separate vertical sticks, to which the stalks of the gloriosa are tied with a rope. The armature may have the appearance of a grid, but for this you will need bamboo reeds. In addition, it is better not to put the support directly in the pot with a flower, as it is very sensitive to various damage to the roots.

Tuber transplant preparation better to start in February. A pot with a diameter of 30-35 cm should have a flat shape and be wide enough. The ideal depth is 20-25 cm. The tuber should be placed vertically on the soil surface. Above it is necessary to pour another 3-cm layer of substrate. Do not forget about the first drainage layer.

The soil must be light and nutritious. The weakly acidic soil is mixed with one part of the turf soil (leafy ground, river sand), two parts of humus and half - peat soil.

Growing from seed

The process of growing gloriosa from seeds at home is longer than the previous one. To obtain a seed, the plant requires artificial pollination. A soft brush is great for moving pollen from flowers to the stigma, which are located near.

Once the seeds have ripened, it is necessary to transplant them into a mixture of soil with turf soil, peat and sand (1: 1: 1: 1). In order for them to germinate, the temperature should be maintained at a level of 21-25 ° C, and the soil should be moderately moist. Grown up seedlings undergo a thinning procedure, after which they are transplanted into separate pots. The flowering period is expected only after 3 years.

Virulence

Gloriosa has poisonous properties therefore, you should not eat it. As soon as it enters the digestive system, its harmful effects on the body begin. The plant should be removed away from animals and children, to exclude cases of poisoning. In addition, wash hands thoroughly after direct contact with the plant.

Transplantation and reproduction

Every year in spring the plant is transplanted using a new nutrient loose soil; this is the main rule of care for the crop. Rhizomes of any type of gloriosa, magnificent, Rothschild are transplanted into a pot with a diameter of 15 cm, in fresh sod or peat ground.

Next, transfer the plant to a room with a temperature of 20 degrees. There should be good drainage in the pot. Until gloriosa sprouts appear, it is watered very little.

After the emergence of new shoots increase watering, and the plant is often sprayed to increase the humidity.

Gloriosa is propagated by tubers, which are separated during its transplantation and seeds. Sown in spring. At the end of the tuber - kids visible kidney eye. It should not be damaged, only then a sprout will appear, and it will be possible to grow a healthy, strong plant. Tubers are quite fragile, so you should handle them carefully when planting.

In the genus Gloriosa, there are only 5 species growing in the tropics of Africa and Asia. They are high climbing or stunted upright grass.

The latter rarely rise to a height of more than 30 cm, but climbing varieties are able to reach 5 meters.

The rhizomes of all gloriosis are characterized by a tuberlike form, and the tips of the leaves that climbs as usual are crowned with antennae.

The flowers on the upper parts of the shoots are bordered with yellow stripes and, when opened, create the illusion of a flame under a gust of wind. During the flowering period, the bordering disappears, and the main red color becomes even more saturated tone. The most popular in floriculture are the first 2 of the following types.

Care and cultivation at home

Caring for gloriosa is not difficult. There are two conditions: cool wintering and high humidity during the flowering period. During the wintering period, the plant slumbers, does not bloom, and sheds its leaves and shoots.

Gloriosa can be stored as bulbous or other tuber crops. The plant categorically does not take out drafts, even indoors. Transplantation in the open ground or on the balcony is carried out only after the shoots appear.

To dig up or not the tubers for wintering is a purely individual question.

Gloriosa can winter both in the soil and outside it. The conditions of detention do not change.

The wintering period begins in September, when the leaves begin to turn yellow and the shoots dry out. By the time all the leaves and shoots have fallen, the plant should be in a dry place.

And then you can keep the flower in a pot, while moving to dark dry conditions with a cool temperature not lower than 12 and not higher than 18 degrees.

Or dig up the tubers, put in the package and store in a cold place at an air temperature of 8 - 12 degrees. But in this case, the expectation of the start of growth may move by about 2 weeks. Tubers are transplanted in late February or early March.

In the phase of active growth and flowering plants need to be fed in sufficient quantities. In other periods, fertilizing is not required. You can use universal for indoor plants, for flowering plants and fertilizing.

For a plant, it is necessary to completely replace the soil during transplantation and very carefully it is necessary to manage with a single kidney.

Tubers are very fragile and even a small injury can destroy the plant.

After transplanting plants need to artificially stimulate growth. To do this, the air temperature should be 15-20 degrees, the lighting is lighter than in winter. The soil should be slightly wet before the shoots.

Important! When choosing a container for gloriosa, it is necessary to give preference to spacious ceramic pots. The diameter of the right pot should be larger than its height! Otherwise, in a flower pot too deep, it will not bloom.

Gloriosa - the queen of flowering vines

Gloriosa magnificent full deserved her name. This unique, growing from tubers climbing plant, limited to a maximum half-meter-long shoots, rightfully ranks among the most spectacular indoor vines. In gloriosa, everything is beautiful: the foliage of a rich color, and flowers, which are difficult to find equal in shape and color. Wavy, deviating petals resemble flames, and the red-yellow transition only underlines this effect. Flexible and surprisingly graceful, this tropikanka requires special conditions and constant attention. But the luxurious inflorescences of Gloriosa, which today is considered one of the most spectacular plants for making bouquets, are worth it.

Insidious gloriosa. Little about the origin of the flower

Glorioso (lat. Gloriosa) is also called the flower of glory. The perennial family of plants includes over 200 species of perennial herbaceous plants.

They come from the African and Asian continents. It was there that nature created all the conditions for plant growth, and this is loose, humus-rich soil, frequent rain and very high humidity.

It is important for the plant and the abundance of heat, sunlight throughout the year.

Gloriosa was brought to Australia, where she successfully passed the acclimatization process. The forests of Southeast Queensland and New South Wales became home to a flower.

But due to the fact that gloriosa began to grow rapidly, suppressing the growth of local herbaceous plants, it was eventually recognized as a dangerous weed. In the subtropics of Gloriosa beats records on the length of the shoot. One and a half - two meters for her is not the limit.

Some specimens reach 5 meters in length. The root system of the flower is distinguished by its tenacity, power and branches easily.

On a long pedicel, a large flower rises above the top of the stem, resembling in form and color of fire tongues, fanned by the wind. Therefore, Gloriosa also has a second name: “Flame Lily”.

The flowering of gloriosa is, in fact, a fantastic picture, attracting the attention of numerous admirers of natural beauty.

Growing gloriosa at home is reduced to two methods: either from seed or from tubers.

Growing gloriosa from seeds

Growing gloriosa from seed photo shoots

When seed planting should not forget that the flowering plants can be observed only in the second or third year. Begin to sow from the end of winter.

To plant successfully, you need to adhere to some rules:

  • For planting it is better to use a deep, wide clay container, which will later be used to grow adult plants.
  • A day before planting, seeds should be soaked in a growth promoter or warm water.
  • The soil for planting should be nutritious and contain humus (3 parts), leaf earth (2 parts), sand and peat (1 part each). After all the components are mixed, the soil should be moistened. You can use the usual soil mixture for flowering.
  • The bottom of the tank for planting must be filled with drainage. It can be a pebble, a crumb of expanded clay or a brick. On the drainage pour a mixture of soil.

  • In the prepared shallow (up to 0.5 cm) dimples, place the seeds and sprinkle them with soil mixture. The distance between the holes at least 7-8 cm, in a pot planted no more than 3-4 seeds.
  • With the help of the film, which covers the planted seeds, they seek to create a greenhouse effect. It contributes to the acceleration of seed germination. The container is placed in a place where the temperature is kept within 25-27 ° C, and there is enough light.
  • Before the first shoots appear, the film needs to be lifted and ventilated for a short time between the film and the ground, so that the excess moisture accumulated can evaporate.
  • The first shoots should be expected only in 1.5 - 2 months.

In regions with a fertile warm climate, Gloriosa seeds are planted directly in the ground and the plant is grown as a garden flower.

Further care for gloriosa seedlings

To reduce the period of germination of gloriosa from seeds, slightly warm the bottom of the clay container (up to 22 ° C) and use additional lighting. With the germination of the first seedlings, the film is not recommended to be removed, and a lighter place with natural light is selected for the container.

But it should not be forgotten that the direct scorching rays of the sun are contraindicated in seedlings. They need to be taught them little by little, and only for the rest of the time to use diffused light. Finally, the film is removed only when the sprung shoots noticeably grow, become hardy and strong. Gloriosa is not replanted from seeds, it continues to grow in the same pots.

How to care for gloriosa at home

Gloriosa Roshtilda planting and care Gloriosa Rothschildiana photo

Moderate watering, which does not allow both drying and over-wetting of the soil, is carried out once a day. Like any other houseplant, gloriosis must be fed with nutrients. Do this at least 2 times a month during the entire growing season of the plant.

To do this, use special (liquid) complex fertilizers, focused on feeding indoor plants, such as "Flower happiness", "Good power", etc.

During the preparation of gloriosa to a state of rest, and this is September - early October, feeding and watering the plants stop until spring. A temperature of 22-25 ° C is considered the most favorable for the growing season of gloriosa from May to October. The shoots of the plant begin to grow actively, from April to June. They are not pruned.

Shoots need more support, as often break from their own gravity. To gloriosa did not grow up, it is bent to the surface of the earth and set the direction of growth. Cylindrical frames, lattice structures that wrap around fast-growing long shoots can serve as a support for the flower.

For plants in the home is very dangerous spider mite. Dry, dusty air accelerates the spread of the parasite.

If you regularly moisten the crown of the plant, gently wipe the leaves with a wet cloth, you can avoid this scourge.

If the measures taken (neutralization with plain water) were not crowned with success, then it is worth turning to insecticides, such as “Vermitek”, “Fitoverm”. Preferably the drug "Actellic", recommended for combating parasites, at home not to use.

Because of the toxicity of all parts of gloriosa, starting from the petal, ending with the tip of the spine, it is necessary not only to limit, but also to exclude children and animals from accessing the flower. Once in the body, the poison causes a strong vomiting reaction, nausea and diarrhea syndrome. Kidney damage is considered a particularly serious consequence of poisoning from the flower.

Gloriosa at rest How to care after flowering

Like all deciduous plants, with the arrival of autumn, Gloriosa begins to shed its leaves. During this period, you need to help the flower, prepare it for the winter dormancy period.

To do this, plant tubers are dug out of a flower pot, which have been formed during the growing season, put them in a moist sand substance and stored in a dark place, maintaining the air temperature in the range of 14 to 16 ° C Some use a refrigerator for storing tubers.

If there is no sand, they are stored in their own pot, in the same soil, but they maintain the required temperature for storage.

  • Beginners need to know that in the first year of the life of the flower green leaves do not fall. The plant starts dropping leaves from the second year. Therefore, the plant is transferred directly to the pot in a cooler room. This may be a balcony or loggia.
  • If after the first year of life the flower has dropped the leaves, then this is a signal that it is necessary to take additional measures to preserve the young tubers. To do this, change the soil and rarely throughout the winter moisten it in order to prevent drying of young tubers.

If you do not apply rare watering, gloriosa may not wake up. In no case can the roots be stored using sawdust or sphagnum. Even if you comply with all these conditions, with the arrival of spring, you can notice the following peculiarity of the flower: a young plant wakes up earlier than an adult. And this is the norm for a flower.

How to plant Gloriosa tubers at home

How to plant gloriosu in a pot photo

  • In the last month of winter, gloriosa begins to be prepared for planting.
  • To do this, acquire a new soil for flowering, lay there nodules in with a slight slope, almost horizontally. The growth buds are directed closer to the edges of the container so that the shoots are not cramped and moisten the soil.
  • Not worth much to deepen the tubers. The height of the soil above the tuber should be no more than 2 cm.
  • When planting you need to take care of support for the shoots. Installing it, you need not damage the bud on the tuber, otherwise the plant does not grow.

It is not scary if immediately after landing gloriosa for a long time will still be in hibernation, not giving signs of life. You just need to continue to care for her, maintaining soil moisture and balance of lighting. The flower will certainly rise.

The difficulty of growing gloriosa from tubers is not.

Constant soil moisture, timely feeding, close to the natural microclimate in the room are a guarantee that the exotic Gloriosa will fascinate you every year with its flowering.

Caution - poisonous!

Despite its beauty and attractiveness, Gloriosa is considered one of the most poisonous indoor flowers. Gloriosa plant does not irritate the skin. Danger arises when parts of gloriosa are ingested while eating in the gastrointestinal tract. To comply with all safety measures after completing any work with the plant, do not forget to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water!

Lily of the Flame and its royal luxury

Gloriosa in its appearance seems more likely to be a competitor of garden clematis than a typical room liana. Large, unusual flowers, modest, but very beautiful greens and surprisingly flexible shoots really remind of the classic garden steeplejacks. But Gloriosa is a plant with a status primarily of room and hothouse stars, which is often grown as a cut-off culture. In the indoor floriculture, this beauty is not such a representative family of Melantiae (Melanthiaceae). The translation of the Latin name gloriosa - “flower of glory” - fully reflects the magnificence of this winding vine from Asia and South Africa. No less popular than the official name of the plant, and popular nicknames - lily of glory, climbing lily, lily of flame.

Gloriosa (Gloriosa) Is a genus of herbaceous perennials with a tuberous rhizome belonging to climbing vines. Flexible, very thin, but not able to twist around the supports and fragile shoots are densely dotted with rather large leaves. Shirokolantsetnye, with a spectacular elongated tip, full-gloss glossy leaves with a bright green color surprise with its simple elegance and elegant mustache at the ends, due to which the climber clings to the support.

The maximum height of gloriosa is usually limited to 1.5–2 m, but the actual size of a plant directly depends on how it is formed and on which support it is grown. The leaves are arranged in three or opposite. Unlike sessile foliage, flowers with double color are located on a rather long peduncle. They bloom in the axils of only the upper leaves. Despite the fact that from a distance the flowers of gloriosa can be confused with a lily, they are very different in structure. The inflorescences of gloriosa wilt down, and rarely located perianth-like leaflets, resembling petals, bend upward, forming a peculiar crown of flames above the center. Long, rarely located, with an unusual wavy edge, they reach 10 cm and flaunt the contrast of a bright base orange-red color with a yellow border.

Watching the change of color on the inflorescences of Gloriosa is extremely interesting. From the powerful buds gradually open flowers are formed, which seem to be flaming petals fluttering in the wind. Initially, the yellow color of the petals gradually transformed into an increasingly saturated red tone, and the flowers constantly replace each other. This liana opens new flowers to replace faded ones and generally has time to release up to 7 inflorescences on each shoot in one season. Thus, the bloom of gloriosa, despite the fact that every single flower does not last too long, stretches for almost the whole summer.

The undisputed leader in popularity and a kind of symbol of the genus has long been Gloriosa luxurious or Gloriosa gorgeous (Gloriosa superba) - Deciduous vine with tuberous rhizomes, clinging to the supports by antennae. Branched shoots up to 2 m long with alternately sitting or collected in whorls oblong-lanceolate leaves with tendrils on the top are very graceful. Gloriosa deluxe produces single, flowers located in the axils of the upper leaves with a deviated perianth divided into six parts. This gloriosa is characterized by the most spectacular wavy lanceolate perianth lobes with an outer pink and inner two-color side, on which the yellow base is replaced by a bright red top. The radially located stamens resembling spaced wheels, as a rule, of green color only emphasize the unusual shape of the perianth.

Gloriosa blooms magnificent from June to September. In addition to the basic form, two other varieties of this plant are very popular - Gloriosa luxurious large-flowered (var. Grandiflora) and yellow (var. Lutea) with pale yellow flowers with unusually curved petals, which seem surprisingly elegant and exotic non-terrestrial. There are many varieties of gloriosa with unusual colors of flowers, especially popular among which are yellow, pink and light green varieties.

It is worth noting that earlier on sale you could find many different types of gloriosis, which were considered as independent plants. But today, almost all popular in room culture varieties are included in a single species - Gloriosa luxurious. To the number of such prequalified species belong gloriosa is simple (Gloriosa simplex), Rothschild gloryosis (Gloriosa rothschildiana), Gloriosa yellow (Gloriosa lutea) and Carsona gloriosa (Gloriosa carson).

Home care for gloriosa

Gloriosa can hardly be called too naughty room exotics. But in the cultivation of this creeper there is only one difficult moment, which many forces to abandon the magnificent spectacle of the flowering of the fiery lily. The fact is that gloriosa requires exceptionally cool wintering. Shedding leaves for the rest, this beauty requires strict temperature control. Without a cool wintering, gloriosa will not only not bloom, but it will not even please with spectacular greenery. The rest of the cultivation of this vine is not too difficult, despite the fact that she prefers high humidity.

Gloriosa belongs to the most poisonous indoor plants. True, the danger arises only when different parts of the plant are ingested when ingested. Skin gloriosa is not annoying. But to comply with all safety measures when working with a plant, it is necessary to complete any procedures by thorough washing of hands with soap and water.

Lighting for gloriosa

According to preferences for predominantly bright illumination, gloriosis can be called a typical southern plant. She prefers not just bright, but sunny locations. True, this winding vine badly endures the midday sun and feels better on the eastern and western window-sills. Due to the fact that gloriosa sheds leaves for the winter, it is not necessary to choose for it during the rest period only the most brightly lit locations and to compensate for the seasonal reduction in light. The vine does not react well to shading, the shoots are drawn out, and you can not wait for flowering at all. Even light penumbra does not like gloriosa.

Comfortable temperature

It is quite simple to choose comfortable temperatures for gloriosa in the period of active development and flowering. This beauty feels great in the usual room temperature range from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. In this case, the temperature fluctuations of gloriosa tolerates very poorly: it is desirable to create conditions for it as stable as possible.

All difficulties with the cultivation of this plant begin with the selection of the winter mode of content. The thing is that this climbing liana when removing from the soil for a period of rest must be maintained at a temperature of 12 to 15 degrees. Below 12 degrees, the temperature for gloriosa should not fall, and the rise in indicators above 18 degrees even when wintering in the soil will lead to a complete disruption of the process of planting flower buds. At the same time, specific indicators depend on digging for the winter or its absence (outside the soil, gloriosu is kept cool, in the soil - a slight decrease in indicators is enough). Many flower growers keep this vine in the refrigerator. Gloriosa sheds not only foliage, but also shoots, it actually turns into a surprisingly compact plant that can be stored like bulbous or other tuberous crops.

The second difficult point in providing comfortable glorioso temperatures is a smooth transition from the rest period to the stage of active development. After transplantation in early spring, the temperature for gloriosa should be gradually increased, ensuring the slowest adaptation possible. Any sharp drop in this period will be disastrous for creepers. In no case can plants be immediately transferred from a cool room to normal room temperatures. The softer the period of adaptation will be, the more abundant gloriosa will bloom. In the "summer" temperature, the plant is transferred after the first signs of growth of young shoots.

During the summer period of flowering, this plant will gratefully respond to the placement on the warm balcony, but you should not take out the gloriosois to the garden, and you can place it in the fresh air only with full protection from drafts and wind. Draft this plant categorically does not stand in the room, especially when it comes to airing rooms in cool weather. From sharp fluctuations in temperature and air flow, glorioso needs to be protected by proper placement in locations with the least air movement in the room. Care must be taken to ensure that the plant does not get the flow of hot air from the heating appliances or from the kitchen.

Watering and humidity

For this vine it is necessary to provide very high soil moisture, which is supported by abundant irrigation. Procedures should be carried out as soon as the top layer of soil dries out. The complete drying of the earth coma during the period of active development for this vine can be destructive, so you should try to keep the substrate medium-moist or at least slightly wet to maintain the viability of the rhizome. But during the rest period of gloriosa, he does not need watering at all. At the same time, it is not necessary to completely stop the procedures immediately, but to transfer the plants to the wintering mode as gradually as they change the range of temperature indicators in spring. Watering for the plants begin to reduce from the moment when the first signs of yellowing of the foliage appear on gloriosa. Gradually reducing the frequency of the procedure and the amount of water used, by the time the tubers go to the stage of complete rest, it is necessary to transfer the plant to the dry mode. But the reverse transition to the stage of active development should be more abrupt. With transplantation, you need to start watering the gloriosa in accordance with the increase in air temperature, controlling the standard drying of the substrate on the upper layer.

It is much harder to provide high humidity to the plants. The higher the performance, the more abundant the gloriosa will bloom and the more comfortable it will feel. For a plant, it is best to use the installation method of humidifiers, which can be used not only special devices, but also conventional trays with wet moss, pebbles or expanded clay. If you supplement such a makeshift moisturizer with a daily spraying, the plant is more than thankful for the beauty and flowering and greenery. But spraying should be carried out very carefully at the flowering stage: if drops of moisture fall on the flowers, they will fall off too quickly.

Both for irrigation and spraying it is important to use soft settled water of the same temperature as the air in the room.

Top dressing for gloriosa

The mode of fertilization for this vine should be fully consistent with the stage of its development. During the rest period, top dressing is strictly forbidden, but during active growth and flowering they are regularly and often introduced. The optimal frequency of procedures for gloriosa - 1 time in 2 weeks. At the same time, one can use both universal room fertilizers, complex mixtures for flowering plants, and alternate organic and mineral supplements.

Transplant, substrate and storage during rest

For gloriosa, substrates are selected from a number of nutritious and high-quality earth mixtures. This plant does not require the selection of extremely complex soil composition, it can quite successfully grow in a simple mixture of two parts of humus and one part of leafy soil. If desired, perlite or sand can be added to increase the friability of the soil. Suitable plant and ready substrates with high nutritional value, in extreme cases - a universal substrate for indoor plants. The main thing is that it is sufficiently nutritious and coarse-fiber, and the reaction of the soil is neutral.

Digging up a tuber for a rest period is an individual question. Gloriosa can overwinter both in and outside the soil. In this case, the conditions of detention do not change, and the choice of storage method is only on their own convenience. The dormant period begins in September, when the plants gradually turn yellow leaves, and then shoots dry out. By the time of transition to the resting stage, the plant should be gradually transferred to completely dry conditions. Further there are two ways:

  1. If you want to keep gloriosa in a pot, then simply place the container in a dark, dry place with a cool room temperature (16-18 degrees) until February-March, when it will be possible to transfer.
  2. If you want to dig up the gloriosa tubers, after the shoots have dried, they must be removed from the soil, cleaned, placed in peat or sand and in a paper box or bag and stored in a refrigerator at a temperature of 8-12 degrees. Such tubers are also transplanted back into the substrate in February-March.

The difference in these strategies affects the pace of development. When preserved in the soil gloriosa starts to grow in about 2 weeks, but when digging and keeping cool, it can take much longer before growth begins.

Regardless of age, gloriosa is transplanted every year when digging out of the substrate and, as necessary, when wintering in the ground. The procedure is carried out in late February or early March, stimulating the spilling of the kidneys. The procedure itself is not too complicated. Unlike many indoor plants, gloriosa requires a complete replacement of the soil. When transplanting, a high layer of drainage (from 5 cm) is laid at the bottom of the container. Thanks to the tuber formed, the vine is planted in much like the classical bulbous plants. Tuber of gloriosa should be placed strictly horizontally, so that about 2-3 cm of soil remain from its top to the top of the substrate layer. It is especially careful to handle the only bud that is located at the round end of the tuber. But with all the rhizome you need to be as careful as possible. Like shoots, the tuber of gloriosa is very fragile and does not tolerate any damage, even a small injury can lead to the death of the whole plant.

After transplanting vines need to be carefully maintained. Plant spillage must be artificially stimulated. Immediately after transplantation, Gloriosa is placed in a temperature range from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, in transitional conditions a little warmer than winter, and in bright light. The soil must always be kept slightly moist, until the moment when the plant has new shoots. From the moment the shoots grow, they begin a gradual adaptation of the plants to the usual conditions and higher rates of substrate and air humidity.

It is worth paying attention to the capacity for this beauty. Gloriosa prefer to grow in ceramic pots, rather than in plastic containers. In this case, the diameter of the pot must necessarily be larger than its height. In too deep containers, as in large containers, Gloriosa will not bloom.

Flame Lily Varieties

Only one of the five types of gloriosa can be grown at home. This - Gloriosa gorgeous or luxurious (Gloriosa superba).

In the open field it can be found in Nepal, India, Africa, Sri Lanka. The flower has a yellow base, which gradually turns into an orange or scarlet apex. Stems can reach 2 meters. The flowering period is June-September. It is divided into large-flowered and yellow.

Variety Gloriosa magnificent Heart of Africa has a large flower with a green base, which smoothly flows into yellow, and then in the scarlet color. A small "fiery lily" has a bright lemon color flowers.

To date, several popular varieties of gloriosa have been bred:

  1. Gloriosa simplex - simple. It has large sweeping shoots. The flowers consist of stamens and wavy petals with a green-scarlet color. The shape resembles a bell.
  2. Gloriosa rothschildiana - Rothschild. Shoots and leaves are large. The base of the petals is yellow, the edges are crimson.
  3. Gloriosa lutea - yellow. Smooth monophonic petals.
  4. Gloriosa carsonii - Carson. Smaller plant. Flowers dark purple color with a yellow curved perianth.

Watering and moisture

It is necessary to water tropical liana moderately. She does not like excessive moisture, can rot the roots. And excessive dryness will cause the plant to wither. Watering is necessary as the soil dries.

If the soil has dried to 2/3, then it should be moistened. Watering requires purified water at room temperature. Never use cold water.

The frequency of watering depends on the season. In the summer it is necessary to make it more frequent, in the fall - to reduce it, in the winter - watering is practically not needed. But in the spring, after transplantation, the frequency should be gradually resumed.

The higher the humidity in the room, the more luxuriant and brighter the flowering will be. Tropikanka needs humidity of 60-80%. To maintain it, you can use air humidifiers, you can place a flower pot next to water or put the pot in a tank with wet moss. It is recommended to spray the plant with a spray bottle to stabilize the humidity. But you need to make sure that the moisture does not fall on the flowers, otherwise they will fall off very soon.

Bouquet of Gloriosa

Comfortable temperature

Exotic beauty does not like sudden changes in temperature and drafts. Having it in the summer in the open air, you should take care to avoid sudden gusts of wind and drafts. During the growth period, the ideal temperature is 22-26 ° C.

To prepare for the winter you need to gradually lower the temperature to 10-15 ° C. The best place for a plant in the winter will be a glazed balcony or basement. To bring the plant out of rest is also necessary gradually.

During the period of growth and flowering tropical beauty needs to be fed with mineral and organic fertilizers. In the spring, when the shoots have grown stronger, fertilizing should begin once a week until flowering.

In summertime, you can replenish nutrient reserves every two weeks. It is best to use liquid fertilizer for indoor flowering plants. Autumn and winter recharge is not required.

Trimming and transplanting

The plant does not need pruning - it only hurts flowering, as the flowers form on the upper stems and leaves. If they are removed, there will be no flowering until gloriosa is fully restored.

Replant vines should be in late winter or early spring. The tubers need to be deepened by 2 cm. The soil needs to be replaced with a new one, since the former has already been completely exhausted. As a substrate, you must choose a loose soil. For loosening, you can add coarse sand, sphagnum moss.

Neutral acidity primer required - pH 6.6-7.2. Perfectly suitable universal substrate with neutral acidity or specialized for tropical climbers.

You can mix the soil for roses and palm trees in a 1: 1 ratio. If the “crawling lily” is growing rapidly, then it can be transplanted into a larger pot in the summer. It does not hurt and does not disturb the growth of the flower.

It is important to find the right support for the plant to curl and crawl. It can be a wire, a ladder, bamboo sticks, a rope, a frame structure. The support should not be thick, otherwise the antennae on the leaves will not be able to lock themselves and they will have to be tied up regularly.
